The Institute has the mission of contributing to the development of the nuclear sciences and related areas to achieve a better understanding of the Universe and boost Mexico's technological and cultural growth.
Our vision is to be a reference entity in basic scientific research developed within a framework of academic excellence and freedom of research that ranges from theoretical, experimental and applied research in the academic programs of matter structure, high-energy physics, plasma physics, gravitation and field theory, radiation and chemistry interaction, plasma chemistry, radiation chemistry, radiochemistry and dosimetry.
The Institute of Nuclear Sciences has the following objectives:
  • Make theoretical, experimental and applied research in the following multidisciplinary academic programs: Matter Structure, High-Energy Physics, Plasma Physics, Gravitation and Field Theory, Radiation and Chemistry Interaction, Plasma Chemistry, Radiation Chemistry, Radiochemistry and Ionizing Radiation Dosimetry, Nanomaterials Chemistry and Computational Nanoscience, Astrophysics and Astrobiology, Optics and Quantum Optics, Complexity, and Interdisciplinary Science.
  • Contribute to training professionals and researchers by teaching courses and directing social service (work placement) papers and thesis work in UNAM undergraduate and postgraduate programs related to the Institute’s field of work.
  • Participate as an active academic entity in the Postgraduate Program in Astrophysics at the Masters and PhD Program in Chemistry and the Postgraduate Program in Physics. Participate in other related areas to the Institute’s field of work.
  • Disseminate research results made in the Institute by organizing, promoting and participating in national and international work meetings.
  • Contribute to the nuclear sciences' development by encouraging that the knowledge generated within the Institute’s research fields, as well as in other related institutions, be used to promote Mexico’s technological development.
  • Provide technical services, in matters within its areas of competence, to the various entities at UNAM and to public and private institutions.
