The Latin American School of Physics, 1959 - 2010

The Latin American School of Physics or, in Spanish, Escuela Latino Americana de Física (ELAF) was founded in 1959 by Marcos Moshinsky (Mexico), Juan José Giambiaggi (Argentina) and José Leite Lopes (Brasil). After its inauguration in 1959 in Mexico, ELAF moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1960, next to Buenos Aires in 1961, and again to Mexico in 1962. Since then, ELAF has been organized every third year in Mexico, so next year's School will be the 18th time that it is celebrated in Mexico, and the 40th overall.

The central theme of ELAF 2010 is Symmetries in Physics, with lectures on Atomic and Molecular Physics, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Time-dependent Systems and Transient Effects and Mathematical Physics.

The purpose of ELAF 2010 is to offer a series of lectures in the general area of Symmetries in Physics to an audience of graduate students and young research scientists principally, but not exclusively, from Latin America, so that they can enhance and deepen their knowledgment in this active and exciting field at the frontier of science.

At ELAF 2010 we plan to offer a series of general courses at an introductory level, as well as courses on applications and special topics at a more advanced level. Both mathematical aspects of symmetries and its phenomenological consequences in different areas of physics will be discussed at the School.

This School is dedicated to the memory of Marcos Moshinsky (1921-2009), one of the founding members of ELAF.
