Pure shape dynamics description of quantum gravity

The "pure shape dynamical" description of the universe (or a toy model of the universe) is a fully relational and dimensionfree dynamical system that determines solely an unparametrized curve in shape space (the space of instantaneous relations between physical objects). In this talk I will present a pure shape dynamical system that has two important properties: (1) it is empirically equivalent to standard quantum mechanics when applied to subsystems and (2) it possesses shape dynamics as a classical limit and is thus empirically equivalent to gravity. I will start my talk with a toy model to illustrate the mechanisms by which quantum mechanics and spacetime are experienced by inhabitants of the toy model universe. I will then introduce a pure shape dynamical system that is empirically equivalent to (1) free quantum fields coupled to quantum cosmology and (2) possesses a classical limit that is empirically equivalent to almost homogeneous general relativistic cosmology. I will show these two properties by applying the lessons learned in the toy model. I conclude the talk with remarks about the challenges that are faced when trying to extend this to a pure shape dynamical description of fully inhomogeneous quantum gravity.
