The wordline formalism in curved space

The worldline formalism is an alternative approach, to conventional quantum field theory techniques (second quantization), to the calculation of Feynman diagrams by means of the quantization of simple particle models, and it is particularly suitable in presence of external fields. However, the presence of background gravity is linked to non-linear sigma models whose path integral quantization requires the specification of a regularization scheme that was source of some controversy in the past. In this talk, we start giving a quite general description of the applications of the wordline formalism in flat space and in curved space and discuss about the quantization of the aforementioned sigma models, both canonical quantization and path integrals. Finally we describe some «spinning» particle models that are linked to the first quantization of higher spin fields: we show how to obtain higher spin linearized curvatures through the canonical quantization of such models and describe the use of path integrals to obtain the one-loop effective action.
