20 YEARS OF X-RAYING NARROW-LINE SEYFERT1 GALAXIES : PROBING THE EXTREME OF SEYFERT ACTIVITY

It is now 20 years since the discovery of the remarkable ultra-soft X-ray emission from Narrow Line Seyfert1 galaxies, and 15 years since the first hard X-ray observations of these objects. These X-ray observations together with multi wavelength studies have shown that NLS1s lie at the extreme end of the Seyfert activity and have resulted in an improved understanding of the AGN phenomenon as a whole. I review the observational and theoretical progress in this important and rapidly expanding field of research, and critically examine the open questions. Finally, I discuss the exciting prospect of using NLS1s as unique laboratories for testing different field theories in the strong gravity limit.
