Naturally Light Fermions from Dimensional Reduction

We explore a scenario to obtain light fermions - far below the cutoff scale - in a natural way, without fine tuning on the non-perturbative level. As a toy model, we consider the 3d Gross-Neveu model in the broken phase and construct a stable brane world by means of a brane and an anti-brane. Fermions of opposite chirality are localised on the branes. At a large brane separation the 2d correlation length diverges exponentially, hence an observer on the brane perceives just a 2d space-time. In his world the asymptotic freedom of the 2d model arises, hence this mechanism provides criticality in a natural way, though with a restrictive occupation condition.
