Stabilizing black strings in AdS

Julio Oliva (Universidad de Concepción, Chile)

RESUMEN: It is well-known that asymptotically flat black strings suffer from the Gregory-Laflamme instability, a long wavelength instability that pervades black objects in higher dimensions as the rapidly spinning Black Ring, as well as ultraspinning Myers-Perry black holes in dimensions greater than five. In this talk, after a short review of the topic, we show that the recently constructed homogeneous black strings in AdS supported by a massless scalar (arXiv:1708.02916) are stable under the mode that triggers the instability of their asymptotically flat counterparts. We also provide further comments on the higher curvature corrections of these objects.
